H.E President Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud “Silanyo” has exercised his constitutional power to grant executive clemency to convicted prisoners, this according to a local news outlet quoting reliable sources close to the presidency.

The number of inmates whose sentences were commuted were serving time for various crimes is said to be 87, all previously held at the Burao central prison, in Togdheer region.

It’s not clear whether the presidential clemency is a humanitarian gesture or a measure to ease the overcrowding and contain the spread of the outbreak of cholera/acute watery diarrhoea (AWD) in the jail.

The outbreak of cholera/acute watery diarrhoea (AWD) inside the correctional facility has already claimed the lives of four inmates while 50 inmates are said to be undergoing treatment.

The situation is getting worse and the number is increasing sharply in Burao, the country second largest city with ore than 2000 cases of cholera/AWD have been reported in Somaliland since the beginning of April.
