Following the heavy downpour that claimed lives and destroyed infrastructure in the city, a calamity that befell a city resident moved the nation to tears.
Living in a ramshackle near a major seasonal river that got swept and claimed the lives of the occupants was what city resident Ahmed Qorane called family and home. Immediately the rainfall stopped on that fateful Tuesday night, none other than the President himself H.E. Musa Bihi Abdi showed at his former doorstep and personally consoled the bereaved father who had just lost two children. Their mother was by then in a comatose situation.
This gesture by the President which was captured depicting the remorse with marked concern hence beamed in televisions moved all Somalilanders wherever they were.
When subsequently the Head of State visited residents living in such dangerous and precarious conditions and locations hence ordered for their immidiete relocations none was so moved than the bereaved Ahmed Qorane.
Upon visiting the President at the Presidency, Ahmed Qorane told the nation in an emotional voice, “Indeed we have a humane President who is sensitive to the plight of his people”.
He further advised the people, “Those who reside in such dangerous locations like me should heed the government’s directive to relocate before a similar incident beckons them”.
Earlier on H.E Musa Bihi Abdi visited the poor people
living around two dams in Hargeisa while he was on a fact finding
mission to see for himself how his people were fairing. He toured Dhami and Jigjigaryar dams where many destitute families reside.
The president was accompanied by Hargeisa Mayor Cllr Abdirahman
Mohammud Aideed (Solteco) amongst other officials.
He saw for himself the dangers posed to city residents by the
dams should they break their banks. They risked flooding entire estates claiming lives and damaging property worth millions of dollars if quick remedy is not found according to the city council assessments.
The city council has promise to resettle the poor people living around the two dams. It is also planning to drain out the water in a controlled manner so that it does not damage or flood people homes.
Cllr Mr.Mohammed Warsame A’alin briefed the head of state
about the city council plan. He stated that caterpillars had been readied to drain the water, and added that the city council will make sure all families residing around the two dams are given new places to live.
Also speaking at the sites was the mayor of Hargeisa Mr.Abdirahman alias Solteco who promised the president that he will resettle all the poor people of Dhami and Jigjigaryar Dams just as the the city council will drain the water away. Mayor Solteco added that Heero-Dhigagta and Qudhah Dheer Dams will also be drained of the water because they pose a risk to outlying areas.
The president directed the city council to make sure within 24 hours that dams’ water has been drained before they damage property and lose life. The president visit comes hot in the heels of torrential rains that have hit Hargeisa and her environs.
This was a day after he had just visited Ahmed Qorane’s family who lost two children to the raging flood waters.
Neighbors confirmed that the family had just rented the two-roomed
corrugated iron sheet house two days ago. The house was situated at the bank of the major seasonal Hargeisa river and around the vicinity of Quda’c deer dam.
