SomalilandPress-HE President Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud “Silanyo” has inaugurated a newly constructed modern naval base in the port town of Berbera which shall now henceforth be headquarters for the Somaliland coast guards.
President Silanyo also commissioned 10 new state of the art patrol craft which were recently acquired by Somaliland government at enhancing maritime capacities of Somaliland coastal guards rising the number of patrol crafts to 12.
The commander of Somaliland coastal guards Admiral Ahmed Aw Osman speaking at the ceremony said “The acquisition of these modern patrol vessels will help us to develop and upgrade our capacities for dealing with crime scenes at sea.
The coastal guards chief said, “The force contributes to the monitoring of fishing activity off the Somaliland Coast, although understaffed and ill-equipped, the force has being instrumental represses acts of piracy and armed robbery off the coast of Somaliland.
“Somaliland coastal guards have being conducting exercises with foreign navies aimed capacity building guidance on counteracting sea piracy crimes given and funded by United Kingdom’s and France which the force has forged closer relations with and also worked together on previous operations for the benefit of the Somaliland Coast Guard,” the Admiral said.
