Crack force to protect both the prospective exploration and drilling of oil
SomalilandPress-The Head of State has at last officially established the creation of the long awaited paramilitary police force unit, the Oil Protection Unit (OPU).
Following the Presidential Decree No. JSL/M/XERM/249-2800/092014 issued yesterday, the President H.E. Ahmed Mohammed Mohamud announced the creation of the specialized crack force which will be charged with the protection of both the prospective exploration and drilling of oil in the country.
The creation of the OPU became imperative given the need of peaceful security and stability around and at the locales of operations as per international norm given the monumental costs of inputs and expected outputs.
The President who is the Commander in Chief of all security armed forces has the prerogative to create, if need be, any security arm or divisional department.
Given the fact that the administration has stepped up the efforts and in essence, prioritized the subjective unveiling and objective availing of the natural resources, such that the sector may be gainfully developed and justifiably guarded.
The OPU will be drawn from both the military and police wings of the security armed forces and serve directly under the interior ministry through the National Police Force.
It’s structure, as directed by the President, will be subject to consultative consensus by the National Police Force Commander and ministers of both the Interior and Defense portfolios.
The Minster of Energy and Mineral Resources Hon Hussien Abdi Dualeh accompanied by Minister of Interior Ali Warancade will on the 30th September fly to meet with all four oil companies operating in Somaliland to brief them on the OPU tender process evaluation results and the plan forward.
