The government of Somaliland is set to issue out identity cards to refugees and asylum seekers currently living in the country this was revealed by the head of the Somaliland Refugee and Resettlement Agency (IDP), Mr. Abdikarin Ahmed Mohamed (Xinf).
Mr. Abdikarin Ahmed Mohamed (Xinf) speaking during the opening of two days meeting meant to drawup a new five year ministerial plan said, “We shall establish a register/Database which will determine those refugees whose presence in the country is lawful and aliens whose presence in the country is considered unlawful.
“Lack of individual documentation has a clear impact on the refugees’ movement and protection and poses risk to our national security,” he added.
The Head of the national refugee agency went on to say , “At the moment, refugees use A4 papers which are easily forged easily or their ration cards for identification purposes…there is need to agree on mechanisms to ensure that appropriate documentation is given to all refugees and asylum seekers. Soon we shall start taking their photographs and collecting necessary data so that we can quickly process their identity cards. The official noted that the cards will be electronic just like the national identity cards adding that we shall issue the ID cards to only refugees who are eligible.
“In the meanwhile, we are making necessary arrangements to obtain the required data (census)relating to the newly internally displaced peoples (IDPs) so as to formulate the required policies and operational decisions that can improve the lives in the future when they’re resettled,” Mr. Xinif stated.
Also participant in the meeting were represenatives of local and international aid organizations and other stakeholders.
