Somaliland: Something New to End this Year

Edna FoundationIt is the time of year when you gather with your loved ones, give thanks and celebrate. As you get ready for this exciting time, we would like you to consider making a donation to the Edna Adan Hospital in honor of those on your list. A donation shows the people in your life how much you care about them while helping to improve the lives of women throughout Somaliland, which The State of the World Mother Report called the second worst country to be a mother. Just $25 can pay for a delivery kit and supplies for a birth.

Another Successful year for the Edna Hospital

We received an amazing gift—the birth of a healthy set of triplets. The threesome includes two boys and a girl: brothers Xussein and Xassan, and sister Xamda. It’s rare in Somaliland for triplets to be carried to full term and to have a normal delivery.

We sent 7 year old Hayat to Dallas in the United States for a vital heart surgery with support from HeartGift. Hyatt suffered from pulmonary stenosis and her procedure was a success. We’re happy to report that she recently visited the hospital for a check up, and she’s doing great. More…

Edna4Expanding the Number of Skilled Public Health Professionals

We were able to turn past midwife students into midwife educators today, a position where they earn a living wage, which are also funded by donations.

The hospital opened new community midwife training programs in Berbera and Gabilay. We also admitted 50 post-basic midwives this past summer because of kind donations from an individual donors. More…

We began training a new group of 44 community midwives, who took their entrance examinations around a month ago.   There were approximately 100 candidates for this popular training program. More…

Dr. Shukri traveled to Europe last month for the first time and presented at the ‘Gynecology and Obstetrics’ session at the Amsterdam symposium on ‘Surgery in Low Resource Settings’.  more..

We are excited to announce that Connecther awarded the Edna Adan Hospital Foundation with $10,000 to support Dr. Shukri and Naima post-graduate medical education. They are the first female doctors trained at the Edna hospital.

We are also pleased to announce that the Edna University Hospital graduated the first class of nurse-anesthetists. The ceremony marked a significant milestone in Somaliland healthcare. Anesthesia training in Somaliland is taking place only at the Edna University Hospital and at Amoud University in Boroma. The program at the Edna University Hospital started in February 2013 when 14 students were enrolled.

Upcoming Projects

The hospital will also use your donations for new, upcoming projects that are on the horizon. We will create a three year, post-graduate, family program for doctors to expand their knowledge of family needs outside of medical problems. We will continue to expand our midwifery training program and establish a nursing preparatory course to be completed during secondary education, so that incoming midwife students have the necessary math, science and English skills to begin their training. There will be training programs for established nurses to become x-ray technicians or surgical theater technicians, meeting the expanding needs of the hospital. Lastly, we will create advanced surgical training instruction for new doctors who do not currently have the necessary experience in surgery the hospital requires.

Thank You!

What you have given already means so much. With your support we were able to affect real change in Somaliland. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of our supporters, volunteers and donors.
