The incoming NEC Commissioners took the oath of office today in a ceremony held at the Presidential palace. The Chief Justice Yusuf Ismael Abdi presided over the swearing ceremony in which the new NEC team took the oath of office in the presence of H.E President Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud Silanyo.
The new electoral commission is set up to replace the previously one.The CJ asked the team to start early preparations for elections to ensure a smooth and democratic process. “You must move with speed to guarantee that necessary preparations for successful elections are held in due time,” he said.
Chief Justice Yusuf Ismael Abdi was speaking during the swearing in ceremony of commissioners expected to prepare and oversee the next general election.
The new Commission consists of seven members, and in line with Article 11(2) of the 2001 Election Law, three members are nominated by the President of the Republic, two are nominated by the House of Elders, and the remaining two were nominated by the registered “opposition” political parties. The nominations are then confirmed by the House of Representatives.
